It’s showtime for Getter Jaani Written by Simon Storvik-Green 25.Apr 2011 This year, Estonia is being represented by the young and vibrant Getter Jaani with the song Rockefeller Street Estonia has had some success in the Eurovision Song Contest, winning in 2001 and having a number of entries finishing in the top 10. This year, the country is being represented by 18 year old Getter Jaani from Tallinn with the song Rockefeller Street.
In order to earn the right to represent her country, Getter had to perform in a semi-final and final at the national Eesti Laul where a total of 19 acts competed. Not only did she beat all the competition but she won a landslide victory, gaining 62% of the votes in the final round or “Super Final” compared to the second placed Outloudz who received 38%. Rockefeller Street written by Sven Lõhmus has, as the title suggests, gained a lot of inspiration from New York City both in terms of the lyrics and the modern, uptempo sound. Already the song has proven popular with the fans and critics alike and is being tipped as one of this year’s favourites. When listening to it you can hear hints of world famous artists including Lady Gaga and Madonna who have inspired musicians the world over. The song also still manages to retain its own unique stylings, which make it stand out and memorable. Rumour also has it that the performance in Düsseldorf will be considerably different to that of Eesti Laul, with a new stage performance, hair styles and costumes. We shall keep you posted when the rehearsals begin. See Getter perform Rockefeller Street in the video below: Who is Getter? Getter’s rise to stardom was sparked off by the TV programme Estonian Superstar. She was the youngest finalist in the programme’s history and the jury’s favourite, winning everyone’s hearts as a beaming sunshine girl. Her phenomenal qualities are truly remarkable. Over her short career, she has gained an imposing number of fans and is now also one of the artists in greatest demand by various promoters and event organisers. See for yourself! In 2010, Getter Jaani played one of the leading parts in the popular youth musical High School Musical. Around the same time, the young singer started her co-operation with the record company Moonwalk, which gave a dizzying launch to her solo career. Her debut single The Best Day (“Parim päev”) was produced by Sven Lõhmus and it became the most played Estonian radio hit of the year. That was followed by an EP and a summer so full of performances it seemed like a continuous concert, with a few film shoots in new Estonian films as intervals. Today, Getter has become the most popular young singer in Estonia. This is also proven by her overwhelming victory at the Estonian National selection for Eurovision Song Contest 2011. Like every other young person preparing for the future, Getter goes to school. She has made statements in the media in defence of the secondary-vocational education system, as she considers studying to obtain a specific profession very important. Getter will soon receive her qualification papers as a tailor and stylist! “…10-year-old girls adore her, 13-year-old girls want to become just like her and even 16-year-old girls regard her as their most “IN” peer of the moment…” says the programme director of one of the largest Estonian radio stations, about Getter. Getter has been drawn to perform 15th at second semi-final of the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest being held on the 12th of May.
